The Pirate Bay has said that it will experiment with using servers carried on small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air, as a way of evading national law enforcement action. The system will use modern radio transmitters that operate at 100Mbps per node, up to 50km away. According to a recent TPB blog post, ”For the proxy system we’re building, that’s more than enough.”

The reality is that using airborne drones will not take TPB equipment out of reach of law enforcement agencies. Countries treat the airspace above their land as within their legal jurisdiction – a fact the TPB acknowledges fact when it states: “This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war.”
